In the United States an accused is entitled to a trial by jury whenever the case is originally brought into federal court and involves an offense for which the punishment may exceed six months’ imprisonment and in which the defendant is prosecuted as an adult.

The jury system originated in England in the Middle Age, magrated to the New World with the first England settlers. And it was elevated to Constitutional stature in two amendments to the Constitution of the United States after the revolution.
Many Americans regard the jury system as a conrete expression of crucial democratic values.
   All citizens who meet minimal qualifications of age and literacy are equally competent to serve on juries.
"        The jury is for justice and democracy, but there are also some critics of the jury system.
As recently as 1968, jury selection conflicted with these ideals. In some states,for example, jury duty was limited to persons of supposedly superior intelligence, education, and moral character. Also the system failed to regularly include women on juries until the mid-20th century.

   For example, the not-guilty verdict in the 1995 double murder trial of O.J.Simpson who was a very famous and rich man .
Simpson  was a very famous football player in america, and he was declared unguilty on the condition that many proofs showed that he killed his ex-wife and another man.
"        Though there are some critics of the jury system , the United States is unlikely to abandon it.
